The Broadway Diner story

Serving great meals since 1948.

Broadway Diner was born in the 60s, but our story starts much earlier — in the late 1940s, when a humble food truck named the Newmarket Piecart arrived in the heart of Newmarket. In 1962, Guy McLeod and his wife, Cherry Washer, took the reins, bringing their own flair and family warmth to every burger served. Cherry’s passion for hospitality runs deep: her father, Pop Washer, started Auckland’s famed “White Lady” food cart, which remains a city icon today.

As American-style burgers and shakes grew in popularity, Guy and Cherry saw an opportunity to reimagine the Newmarket Piecart as the Broadway Diner, serving American-inspired classics that have since become iconic Kiwi eats.

Hearty burgers, toasties, shakes — all handmade with an unwavering emphasis on freshness and premium quality, using market-fresh produce and their own original recipes. Guy’s motto remains our promise: “a balanced meal in a bag.”

The legacy continues...

NEXT GENERATION OF SCRUMPTIOUS-NESS.

Broadway Diner is more than a local institution — it’s family. In 2014, Guy and Cherry’s daughter Fiona stepped up to carry on the legacy, keeping the same spot, the same recipes, and the same commitment to great food. That’s Broadway Diner: open late, every night of the year, still serving legendary Kiwi burgers.
